Google Drive is changing how it handles trashed files and documents. Beginning 13th October 2020, the service will automatically delete files in the trash folder after 30 days.

The change means that Drive’s trash will mirror other Google products like Gmail. This allows a more consistent system across all of Google’s products.

“This change matches the policies of other G Suite products and services, such as Gmail. This will help ensure behavior is consistent and predictable for users across G Suite products and will help make sure that items users trash is actually deleted as expected,” Google said in a blogpost.

Before, Google Drive would keep files in the trash folder indefinitely. However, if a user entered the trash folder to actually delete the files, the files will be permanently gone.

G Suite Administrators will also still have the power to restore items deleted from the trash for up to 25 days for active users. This gives users a chance to retrieve a file they accidentally deleted.

In a way, users will be able to save some space as files in the Google Drive trash folder still have the Drive storage quota. Google will add a banner notification to Google Drive and the specific Google Docs and Google Forms apps to make sure no user misses the changes from 29th September 2020.
