According to 9to5Google that broke the news, the fact check label will first appear under thumbnail results in Google images. Then, when you open the full image, you will see a summary of the fact check. This move is becoming popular among tech companies that users rely on for information.
At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Google, Twitter and Facebook all mentioned that they would actively try to curb misinformation about the virus on their platform. Not long after, other apps under the companies’ umbrella, like: WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, News and so on also started getting the censorship.
Twitter is one of the most popular in the fact-checking game. Even before the pandemic, as early as January 2020; the social networking platform had told users that manipulated media would be flagged and labelled. We recently saw an example where Twitter labelled an edited photo and a manipulated video of US Presidential aspirants, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, respectively.

Google’s image fact check label will be mainly used when the images are viral. A statement from the company reads:
“Photos and videos are an incredible way to help people understand what’s going on in the world. But the power of visual media has its pitfalls—especially when there are questions surrounding the origin, authenticity or context of an image.”
It adds that; “These labels may appear both for fact check articles about specific images and for fact check articles that include an image in the story.”

Google says its search results and YouTube will use rely on ClaimReview for fact-checking. ClaimReview is an open method used by publishers to indicate fact check content to search engines. It adds that the labels will not affect the image ranking and that; it will continue to show the most ‘relevant, reliable information available’.
