General Motors To Use Qualcomm Chip For Next Gen ‘Hands Free’ Driving

General Motors says it would be using Qualcomm chips for its next-gen ‘hands free’ driving mode. Known as the ‘Ultra Cruise’ system has been redesigned using Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Ride Platform.

The Qualcomm chip has a relative size of “two laptops stacked together” with the processing power of “several hundred” personal computers according to GM. Qualcomm will be making two different chips for the automaker. This includes the Snapdragon SA8540P system-on-a-chip as well as SA9000P artificial intelligence accelerator.

The automaker says these two chips will output “low-latency control functions on 16-core CPUs and high-performance AI compute of more than 300 Tera Operations Per Second for camera, radar, and lidar processing.” These chips will handle all the hands-free functions of General Motors ultra cruise system including turns, stop signs, as well as others.

Elsewhere, Qualcomm has announced it is collaborating with Microsoft to build a custom Snapdragon chip for its AR glasses. The next-gen Augmented reality news was announced at the CES 2022 keynote from Qualcomm.
