One would think that a killer virus on the prowl and an enforced lockdown will dispel thoughts of clubbing from the minds of all. However, the opposite is what’s at play in Lagos.

The Lagos state police command recently reported it has arrested 620 persons including party-goers and str*ppers for violating the lockdown rule in the state.

In a statement, the Lagos Public Relations Officer Bala Elkana said “On April 24, 2020, around 1.30am, acting on credible intelligence, operatives from the Idimu Police Station arrested 39 suspects in a hotel at Idimu for clubbing and str*ptease. This is in total violation of the lockdown order and social distancing regulations.”

In the same vein, policemen of the Maroko Police Station interrupted a party at Lekki Gardens and arrested the hosts.

On April 23, 2020, around 10.30pm, operatives from the Maroko Police Station arrested 10 suspects for organizing a party at the Lekki Gardens” Said Mr Elkana

”The suspects were arraigned on three counts and found guilty as charged. They were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and community service to run concurrently.

“Similarly, 121 violators of the lockdown order were arrested in different parts of the state and charged. They were awarded fines ranging from N5,000 to N10,000 and two hours community service.

Also, there’s being reports of commuters ferrying travelers interstate, further increasing the risk of spread of the virus.

However, Mr. Elkana in a statement says the state police have arrested both travelers and commuters flouting the Lagos lockdown rule.

Elkana said, “On Tuesday, April 21, 2020, around 8pm, acting on information, operatives from the Denton Police Station arrested 95 inter-state travelers at the Bhojson area, Ebute Meta, in seven commercial buses with number plates LG 91 BGT, traveling from Lagos to Benue; BDA 690 XA, Lagos to Abuja; BGA 86 EA, Lagos to Abuja; LSD 459 XA, Lagos to Benue; LRN 105 YR, Lagos to Ilorin; LSD 81 XX, Lagos to Ilorin; and BWR 975 PN, Lagos to Abuja.

He however said that “The buses were impounded; the drivers and passengers were arraigned before a mobile court and sentenced accordingly. In addition, 211 violators of the lockdown order were also arrested in different parts of the state and also charged”

Also, a Sheikh Suleiman Abubakar, the Imam of the Sheik Central Mosque, Mile 12 was picked up by policemen. He was arrested for holding evening prayers (Maghrib and Isha) in the mosque with a huge number of worshippers. This is in clear violation of the Lagos lockdown regulations.

From all indications, it’s apparent residents are barely adhering to the Lagos lockdown rule. With 732 cases, Lagos State remains the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. Everyone is therefore enjoined to stay home and stay safe.
