Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen launches organisation to fight social media ills

Frances Haugen, a former Facebook engineer-turned whistleblower, has launched an organisation called Beyond the Screen to fight social media threats.

The organisation is a non-profit, which Haugen says would undertake the task of documenting the failure of big tech and how to rectify them. In her brief statement, she made it clear that Beyond the Screen mission is not to put an end to social media.

Instead, she says that the organisation will seek ways to make it better human lives.

“We can have social media that brings out the best in us, and that’s what Beyond the Screen is working toward,” she said. “Beyond the Screen will focus on tangible solutions to help users gain control of our social media experience.”

Frances Haugen made a name for herself after she leaked documents showing that Facebook was aware of its capacity to harm users, especially underage ones. Instead, the company had ignored the dangers and chose to focus on monetisation.

While Meta, which now owns Facebook had denied the allegations, they were so damning that they caused a movement for new regulations in the US, which will be rolling out slowly.

Beyond the Screen will partner with Common Sense Media, an organisation that reviews and rates media and tech for its suitability for children, and Project Liberty, an initiative that focuses on the use of personal data and monitors digital economy.

In a statement, Project Liberty founder Frank McCourt said: “We look forward to working with Frances and her team to launch this new initiative and advance our shared goal of enabling healthier digital communities and stopping harmful business models.”
