Fortnite is planning on allowing friends to video chat while they are playing together online. The new video chat feature will allow players of the Battle Rvoyale game to see live feeds of their friends inside the game.

The feature will only be available on PC, PS4, and PS5 at its launch. Houseparty powers the new feature which Epic acquired in 2019. To use the video chat feature, you’ll need to link your Epic and Houseparty accounts. Afterward, you can enable a ‘Fortnite mode’ in the app.

Then you’ll be able to create a party of friends, and their live feeds will be displayed on the left-hand side of the screen while playing the game. You can create a party of up to 10 people in the app, however, only the four most recently active players will appear in Fortnite.

To get going hardware-wise, you’ll need your PC or PlayStation for the game and then the Houseparty app running on an iOS or Android device to serve as your camera.

Epic says it is using face detection libraries from Apple and Google to make the Houseparty app display your face only and replace everything else with a colorful background on the video chat while playing Fortnite.

If your face moves off the camera, the feed won’t show anything but your background. The company says this was done in part for safety reasons and to keep things focused. The company has not announced when the feature will be coming to its other platforms and which other games it is coming to.
