Alas, almost everyone has at some point have experienced hair loss at their temples. This is because the hair at the base of the head is the most fragile.
“The hair around the hairline is finer and more fragile than the hair strands throughout the rest of the scalp,” explains trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) and hairstylist Kari Williams. “Additionally, the hairs around the hairline are manipulated, brushed, and pulled more than the other hairs, which increases their fragility.”
Also, protective hairstyles like Ghana braids, cornrows with extensions, or even stand-alone braids put a lot of stress on the edges of the hair. If you’ve been experiencing hair loss at your edges, this piece has few pointers on how you can fix it.
Go easy on the protective styles and use of extensions
If your edges are breaking off, the first thing you want to do is ease up on using extensions. This includes protective styles, braids, and its other cousins. Just let your edges breathe. If you’ve to make these styles, ensure to tell your stylist to leave out your edges.
Stay off tight bands or hats
If you’ve been using hairbands to pull your hair up, then it’s time to stop. Instead, use silk scarves or satin hairbands to hold your hair together. Also, be mindful of hats that put pressure on your temples.

Don’t use hot air
Since the hair is fragile and already breaking off, using heat on them is not the best idea. When blow-drying, make sure to leave out the hair at your temples to dry on its own.
Use edge control gel sparingly
I know; how can you achieve edges on fleek without edge control gel? It’s like the holy grail of edges. But be careful how you apply this product because it can actually cause your edges to break. Most edge control gels are made with alcohol for fast drying. However, its dry and hold qualities can adversely affect the soft hair at the hair base. “Because alcohol is oftentimes used in styling products for providing hold, the hair may feel drier if styling products are layered in repetitive use and not washed out,” says hair scientist Dr. Rolanda Wilkerson Ph.D. So, use sparingly and remember to wash off at the end of the day
Cover your hair with silk bonnet or scarf
Dryness and friction are some of the major causes of hair breakage and the edges are not left out. When you sleep without covering your hair, the moisture seeps out into your pillowcase. Cover your hair with a satin bonnet or tie with a silk scarf before you go to bed. However, be careful not to tie too tightly on the edges of your hair as this is counterproductive.
Moisturize your edges with natural oils
Coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter should be used on the edges if you’re experiencing loss. You can also use castor oil as it works wonders for hair growth. Periodically take a portion of your preferred oil and gently massage onto your temples.
