1. Listen

Everyone wants to be listened to and understood. So if you want people to like talking to you, you have to listen and empathize with them. The topic is about talking to people, yes. But to be good at conversations, you first have to listen. If your goal is to get to know the person you’re talking to, you have to hear them and understand what they are saying. Don’t be in a rush to make a point or cut them short. Watch their expressions and pay attention to the nuances.

2. Don’t look down on small talk

A lot of people underrate the importance of small talk, but you shouldn’t. You can tell a lot about a person’s personality by the way they discuss random meaningless things. Small talk is also the first step to meaningful conversations. You can’t just meet someone and start having deep conversations immediately. You have to ease into it, bring up light-hearted non-political issues and keep the convo going!

3. Ask questions

If you want to move from small talk to serious conversations, asking questions is a good way to transition. Asking questions lets the person know that you are interested in talking to them and will make them open up to you more. Don’t be too pushy with your questions. If you persist when the person declines to answer your question, you might come off as pushy and suspicious.

4. Pay them compliments

People love it when you compliment certain things about them. It makes them feel special and appreciated. Find ways to add little compliments into your conversations. People like to feel good about themselves and if you make them feel good, they will want to talk to you more. Don’t overdo it though. They can tell when you’re overdoing it and patronizing them.

5. Infuse some humor

The best conversations are the ones that you can look back on and laugh. Being funny in conversations is good because laughing makes people feel good. There are rules though. Don’t make poorly-timed jokes or jokes at the expense of other people. The wrong type of jokes can make you look ill-mannered and insensitive. Keep it light-hearted and try not to hurt anyone’s feelings.
