Facebook Users In The UK Will Lose All Their EU Data Privacy Protection In 2021

Facebook users in the UK will lose all the strict data privacy protection laws of the European Union, according to a report from Reuters. This is because UK citizens are no longer citizens of the European Union; and thus no longer subject to its laws.

Instagram and WhatsApp users will have to sign terms of service agreement in the coming months with Facebook’s headquarters in California; instead of its European branch domiciled in the Republic of Ireland.

Essentially the company’s UK users will no longer be covered by data policies crafted to adhere to the EU’s stringent privacy regime. Google also made a similar move early in 2020. UK users will still have the protection of UK data privacy law which is still similar to EU’s GDPR.

Facebook’s UK division told Reuters that “there will be no change to the privacy controls or the services Facebook offers to people in the UK”. However, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram users will have to re-agree to the terms and conditions again, and Facebook will ask them to do that in the next six months.

The move, however, has worries UK privacy advocates as they have concerns that the UK will share the data with the US government. The executive director of Open Rights Group, a privacy advocacy group, told Reuters that “[t]he bigger the company; the more personal data they hold; the more they are likely to be subject to surveillance duties or requirements to hand over data to the U.S. government”.
