Facebook Sues OneAudience For Unethically Accessing User’s Data

Facebook is suing OneAudience for unethically accessing its user’s data. It is accusing the analytics company of paying developers to install a malicious software development kit (SDK) in their apps. The SDK could then later be used to exploit the “login with Facebook” feature to unethically gain access to personal data without users’ permission.

SDKs are a collection of software development tools that makes it easier and faster for developers to build their apps. However, they may also contain tools that aren’t necessary, like trackers that harvest information about your device and app usage back to the SDK maker. The SDK maker can then use the information for targeted ads.

Facebook tried to audit OneAdience, however, the company was unwilling to cooperate.

OneAudience was first found to be harvesting this data in November 2019. Facebook had at the time launched an audit into the company, however, OneAudience chose not to cooperate at the time. It had maintained that the data “was never intended to be collected” and that the SDK had been shut down.

OneAudience suit setting the standard for protecting user privacy

Facebook’s director of platform enforcement and litigation, Jessica Romero, in a blog post about the lawsuit said:

“This is the latest in our efforts to protect people and increase accountability of those who abuse the technology industry and users.

Through these lawsuits, we will continue sending a message to people trying to abuse our services that Facebook is serious about enforcing our policies, including requiring developers to cooperate with us during an investigation, and advance the state of the law when it comes to data misuse and privacy.”

This is perhaps Facebook’s response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2016. A lot of experts opine that the social media giants really should be doing more to protect user privacy. Suing a company for improperly collecting user data is perhaps a step in the right direction.
