Facebook has announced a donation of $200 million to Black creators, Black-owned businesses, and nonprofits that support the Black community. The social media giant had also pledged $10 million to groups fighting against racial injustice earlier.

“We’ve been speaking with Black business owners to understand how we can best support them, and in the short term, we’ve heard that financial support can go a long way, especially during a pandemic and economic downturn,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post.

Zuckerberg said he is aiming to double its number of Black and Latinx employees by the end of 2023. The company has also pledged to have 30% more Black people in leadership roles over the next five years.

Breaking down the $200 million donation, COO, Sheryl Sandberg said that Facebook is also promising to spend $100 million every year with Black-owned suppliers. The suppliers will provide facilities, construction, marketing agencies, and other services.

The donation includes $25 million in support of Black content creators and $75 million in grants of cash and ad credits to support Black-owned businesses and nonprofits that serve the Black community.

In addition to these, Facebook will be giving 100,000 scholarships to Black students toward digital skills certifications through its Facebook Blueprint program. It will do this in addition to its CodeFWD and TechPrep programs. The CodeFWD and TechPrep programs offer resources and support to help underrepresented communities get started in computer science and programming.

The company will donate $5 million to the over 250,000 Facebook Fundraisers created for three racial justice organisations on Juneteenth. The three organisations are Equal Justice Initiative, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and Innocence Project.

The social media giant also announced a new space in the Facebook app called Lift Black Voices. Lift Black Voices will function to highlight stories from Black people, share educational resources. It will also inspire people to take action through fundraising for racial justice causes.
