Elon Musk revealed in a Tweet that his deal to buy Twitter hit another bump after it was temporarily placed on hold as the company recalculates its value. While Musk assured his followers that Twitter is still committed to acquisition, there are speculations that his $44 billion bid may have to increase.

In a Tweet that quotes a Reuters article, the tech billionaire said:

“Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users…

To find out, my team will do a random sample of 100 followers of @twitter. I invite others to repeat the same process and see what they discover…”

The company filed that the fake/spam accounts on its platform represent ‘less than 5%’ of its users. If this is found to be true, then its previous value may go up because it would mean that it has more monetisable users than was previously calculated. Additionally, Musk himself had proclaimed that one of his first points of call when he takes over the social media company would be removing as many fake/spam accounts as possible.

Also, plans to increase ad revenue hinge on the number of ‘real’ users are on the platform.

This latest development has raised doubts about Elon Musk’s intention to buy the company. While, on the surface, it still seems like the deal is going forward, with some major changes already going on, there is the belief that the billionaire’s team is working behind the scene to get him out.
