Prosecutors are recommending that disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes should get a sentence of up to 15 years. In addition, they want her to pay investors $800 million in restitution.
As Reuters reports, the Department of Justice disclosed its view in a filing on Friday. “Considering the extensiveness of Holmes’ fraud… the sentencing of 180 months’ imprisonment would reflect the seriousness of the offenses, provide for just punishment for the offenses, and deter Holmes and others,” the filing read.
One of the most famous US tech scandals of recent times saw Holmes convicted on four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy in January 2022. Law experts say that each count carries a maximum of 20-year jail term that is likely to be served concurrently.

However, many believe that she will not serve up to the maximum sentence and the prosecutors demanding for a 180-month prison time shows that she may serve even lesser time.
Left to Holmes, she doesn’t want to go to jail at all and requested for home confinement. The 38-year-old former biotechnology entrepreneur welcomed a child in July 2021 and is said to be pregnant again as she faces her sentencing.
On Monday, November 7, 2022, US District Judge Edward Davila denied her request for a new trial after the prosecutors’ case was put in jeopardy with the appearance of their witness, former Theranos lab director Adam Rosendorff on her front door.
Holmes had been worth $4.5 billion in 2015, according to Forbes, and her company, was valued at $9 billion at the time. Now, her wealth is a pile of dust. She will be sentenced on November 18, 2022.
