An all-electric passenger plane completes its test flight

An all-electric passenger plane completed its test flight on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. It took off from Grant County International Airport in Washington and reached an altitude of 3,500 feet.

The plane is a nine-passenger aircraft named Alice and in its test flight, there were no passengers onboard. Also, despite the success of the test, the plane may not be available for commercial use until 2027.

One of the main challenges that Alice (and all other electric aircrafts) face(s) is battery technology. Usually, batteries with renewable energy are heavy and not able to hold enough power for long-distance flights. So, while reducing efficiency, the tech is not yet viable for the air transport industry. Additionally, there is the fear that overexerting the batteries could lead to fire outbreak.

Eviation, the company that made Alice, is targeting a flying test of longer duration and would be checking the data it collected from the first test flight. The makers plan to make Alice into an aircraft line able to carry nine passengers, six passengers, and e-cargo.

The growing interest in electric air technology is because of the amount of pollution and environmental degradation it currently causes. For now, startups are targeting aircrafts that can cover shorter commutes like New York City to Boston or Los Angeles to Las Vegas. If they succeed, then, they can start focusing on longer flights.

Already, electric cars (and soon trucks) are providing cleaner alternatives for road transportation in many regions of the world.
