Elden Ring beats Call of Duty to become #1 best-selling game

Elden Ring has become the best-selling video game over the past 12 months, beating former number 1, Call of Duty. Developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the game owes its story and materials to fantasy writer George R. R. Martin and director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Released in February 2022 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, Elden Ring managed to sell more than 13 million copies in its first five weeks. It beat every other competition despite them having nearly nine months’ head start.

The action role-playing game is played in a third-person perspective and includes several combat styles, weapons, magic spells, horseback riding, summons, and crafting.

Despite the conservative expectations of investors (they expected it to sell 4 million copies in its first five weeks), Elden Ring was already set up for success with the buildup to it and the reputation of those working behind the scenes. No wonder, two years before its release, it was crowned Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2020 and retained the crown the following year.

In related news, the Nintendo Switch emerged as the best-selling console in the past year, outselling Sony’s PlayStation 4 in lifetime sales in the US. Its recent milestone makes it the fourth highest-selling console ever, behind the PS2, Xbox 360, and Wii.

You can start playing Elden Ring now if you own any of the consoles mentioned earlier or a suitable PC. All you need to do is buy a suitable version of the game.
