DuckDuckGo has seen its service in India restored after it was caught up in a mix up involving the country’s ban on Chinese apps. The privacy-focused search engine had been unreachable by users since the ban on 1st July 2020.

The company had said that the problem was not from its own end. DuckDuckGo also confirmed talking to local internet service providers to see its service restored in the country. AndroidPolice reports that the service appears to have been blocked on their DNS servers. DuckDuckGo, however, confirmed that the search engine was still accessible through most third-party DNS resolvers.

In a tweet, the company said that the service is being restored in India.

AndroidPolice also confirms that the block is still in place on India’s Jio networks at least. However, it says that Airtel and Vodafone seem to have unblocked the service for most people.

Additionally, the app is encouraging those who still have difficulty connecting to the service to change their DNS provider or use a VPN. DuckDuckGo itself recommends that its users switch to Cloudflare.

DuckDuck was among the app banned by the Indian government. But it assures users that it has contacted the government in a bid to resolve the issue.

“We have contacted the Indian government but have not yet received a response. We are bewildered on why the Indian government would instruct Indian ISPs to block DuckDuckGo but are optimistic that this will be resolved soon,” a DuckDuckGo spokesperson said.
