Domino’s apparently makes the delivery of approximately three million pizzas daily from its 16,100 stores. The company is experimenting with robots now to replace its human workload. The company will start with testing the technology with Houston, USA.

Domino’s intends to use an autonomous mini delivery van called the R1 for the pizza deliveries. The cars are produced by an American robotics company, Nuro. They already work on autonomous cars used in delivering groceries from supermarkets around the United States.

The company started the building robot Toyota Prius in August of 2018. They gradually advanced to making purpose-built delivery vehicles in December of the same year.

How it would work

The R1 has no space for human operators and has just a cargo compartment. It is also about eight and a half feet long and half the width of the Toyota Corolla.

According to Nuro’s head of partner relations, Cosimo Leipold, the car has no steering wheels or brake pedals. This means that it cannot be physically driven by a person.

The R1 will also drive on real streets at about 25 miles per hour. It will navigate the roads alongside human motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Customers will now have the option of selecting robot deliveries when ordering from Domino’s stores. They will receive a one-time PIN code to open the van’s pizza compartment when the delivery arrives. The service will reportedly begin later in the year 2019.

Nuro robot to aid Domino’s pizza delivery

Nuro started making autonomous car deliveries in Texas and Arizona first in America. This was because the cities had flexible autonomous car testing policies.

Domino’s had always wanted to take advantage of technology to improve its pizza delivery operations. In 2016, they had partnered with a drone company in New Zealand to make the world’s first pizza delivery by drone.

In 2017, it also partnered with a robot company to make small sidewalk robots. They made deliveries to a few cities in Europe with the robots.

And last year, they also worked with Ford auto company to test deliveries in cities in America.
