The colour of your urine can be a very important clue to your health and you shouldn’t ignore it. Diseases such as kidney infections and tumours can be detected from the urine.

In general, the colour of the urine varies between yellow and transparent, depending on the level of hydration of the body, but may also indicate certain nutritional deficiencies. Below are different colours of urine and what they say about your health.

Transparent urine

If your urine is transparent, it means you drink too much water. It may even be necessary to reduce the consumption of this liquid.

Yellow

There are four shades of yellow, and each has a different meaning:

Light yellow: It is a normal colour that shows that you are properly hydrated. This is the healthiest shade.

Dark yellow: Your body is functioning normally, but you need to drink more water.

Amber or honey colour: The body doesn’t get enough water. You need to drink more water.

Dark Beer Tone

This may show that you are suffering from liver disease or severe dehydration. Drink more water. If the colour remains the same, go to the doctor.

Red

If you have recently eaten blueberries, it is normal for the urine to turn red. If you haven’t consumed any of such food or fruit, it means you may have blood in your urine.

It may not be anything serious, or you may have a serious problem, such as kidney disease, tumours, infections, etc. It’s important to go to the doctor.

Orange

Orange urine can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • The body is not well hydrated.
  • You have nutritional deficiencies.
  • You may be suffering from liver disease.

Blue or greenish

Blue or green urine requires a visit to the doctor, as a preventive measure. The cause of these two shades can be a rare genetic disorder (hypercalcemia), but also the consumption of certain foods or a side effect of some drugs.

White

If the urine has white particles, it means you have a bacterial infection. Men’s urine can also become whitish after intercourse.

Ensure you see your doctor if you observe any drastic change from the normal colour of your urine. Early detection is key to tackling any disease.
