For the first time in history, the Democratic and Republican nomination conventions will be held online. The conventions which are rituals of the US presidential election cycle faces what seems to be the biggest test of voting technology yet.

The Democratic party, which aims to dethrone President Trump and take back the White House, starts their convention on 17th August 2020. In a bid to possibly hold a physical convention, the party had delayed the convention by up to a month. Some of its most popular members, like former President Barack Obama, will attend the convention.

The Republican party candidate, President Donald Trump, seeks another term in office. His party’s convention will begin on 24th August 2020.

The candidate of the Democratic party Joe Biden and President Trump will pick up their respective party nominations at the conventions. This time though it will be without cheering crowds, loud music, and the general paparazzi for these types of events.

Technical glitches could also make or mar the events. The pandemic means that both Parties could risk broadcasting via video conferencing services which could be derailed by freezes, connection mishaps, and mute fails.

The virtual conventions will give the US political class a taste of the unusual 2020 and the new normal where everything is done virtually. Court cases and schools now hold online. America’s favourite sport, Baseball is played without fans in the stadium.

The Democrats and Republican Parties holding virtual conventions show the new reliance on the internet and the doggedness on man to continue his life as normal, adapting when there are intrusions.
