Covid-19 Update 19th March: Four New Cases Of Coronavirus Confirmed In Lagos

The Lagos state government has confirmed another four fresh cases of coronavirus in Lagos, Nigeria. The Lagos state commissioner for health, Professor Akin Abayomi confirmed the new cases in Lagos. This brings the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Lagos to 12.

Case Discovered In Ekiti

A fresh case of coronavirus on the 17 of march confirmed in Ekiti state. The confirmation was made following the passing of an American whose death is under investigation.

 

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, had on Wednesday morning announced made the announcement. In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Health, Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, he said:

 

“The Ekiti State Taskforce on COVID-19, headed by His Excellency Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, can confirm that we have recorded an incidence of a Nigerian male, 38 years old, of Ekiti origin, who has tested positive to COVID-19,”

 

The statement said the confirmed case was suspected to have been infected while driving an American Caucasian, male, 27-years-old, who was visiting Nigeria from Richmond, Virginia, USA in the company of his caregiver, a Nigerian female, 31, of Ekiti origin.

 

“The American male and his Nigerian female caregiver, arrived Nigeria on 3rd March 2020 through the Muritala Mohammed International Airport Lagos,” the read in part.

 

Ehanire further revealed:

 

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the pair were driven by our confirmed case to Ibadan, where they stayed for two weeks, and arrived Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State on 13th March, 2020.

 

“A day after their arrival, the American male fell ill and he was taken to a private hospital where he was referred to a tertiary hospital. Unfortunately, he died from complications of his illness.

 

“The hospital authorities alerted the State Taskforce and samples were taken from the American male as well as his two companions. The test for the male driver came back positive; the test for the female caregiver came back negative while the test for the American male was inconclusive.”

 

The Oyo state government has launched a manhunt in the state. This is to trace persons that came in contact with the American and his entourage.

Schools/Churches To Shut Down Due To Corona Virus

The Lagos state government has shut down schools within the state. The decision was take as a measure to control the spread of the coronavirus. This is to take effect from March 23rd 2020.

Lagos and Ogun states have also suspended religious gatherings of more than 50 persons

 

Olanrewaju Elegushi, Lagos state commissioner in a meeting informed reporters after a meeting with religious leaders that the suspension of large gatherings had taken effect.

 

He said: “We met with religious leaders, both Christians and Muslims. We discussed, argued and realised that the lives of Lagosians are important to us. We prefer to offend people than to kill our people”
