Tesla is working hard to calm its factory workers as regards the spread of COVID-19 in its Fremont, California facility. The company has faced criticism over its unwillingness to close its factories during the lockdowns and improve its workers’ safety since it reopened.
Tesla’s head of environment, health, and safety, Laurie Shelby, sent an e-mail to employees to allay their fears. However, some employees remain worried about infections and lack of adequate safety precautions in the Fremont factory.
The mail was first reported by The San Francisco Chronicle.
“Since we restarted operations, we have had zero COVID-19 workplace transmissions. COVID-19 exposure has occurred outside the workplace primarily through family members or housemates, and in most instances, the employee followed safety protocol, informed their manager, and stayed home or went to get tested,” Shelby said in the email.

A Washington Post report had previously stated that some employees at Tesla’s seat manufacturing facility, had tested positive for the virus, citing anonymous sources.
The factory is just some miles away from the Fremont car factory. The report did not specify where or how these workers had contracted the virus.
Tesla’s Previous measures to prevent infection during the are no longer in effect. The measures included staggering shifts and taking workers’ temperatures on a one-at-a-time basis. The shifts are now no longer staggered and employee temperatures are now being monitored by thermal cameras.
Additionally, some of the workers told CNBC, anonymously, that complying with those measures were simply impossible. The employees say they cannot wear a face-covering for the period of their entire shift, thoroughly clean shared tools and equipment between shifts. They add that it’s also impossible to keep social distance between coworkers during work and during breaks.
