Professor Akin Abayomi has announced releasing the 179 quarantined people who allegedly had contact with the Coronavirus index case. Professor Abayomi, who is the Lagos State Commissioner of Health, revealed this at a Press Conference.

He said that the 179 individuals got their freedom on Friday 13th March 2020. Among them, 40 were quarantined in Ogun State while the others were monitored in Lagos State.

However, because they had exceeded the mandatory 14-day isolation and still did not show any symptom of the infection, the authorities let them go.

He also added at the conference in Lagos:

“We are close to discharging the index case, we want to be sure he poses no danger to society anymore.”

Commenting on the Nigerian who had tested positive to the coronavirus, the commissioner elaborated:

“His tests initially showed that he was positive to Coronavirus twice and now, he has tested negative to the virus twice on two consecutive tests carried out.”

Professor Abayomi further explained that the quarantine measure they had put in place succeeded. He told the media houses that gathered for the press conference:

“The remaining contacts in Ogun and Lagos State remain symptom-free and they have exceeded 14 days surveillance. Which means that we have been able to interrupt the transmission between the index case and others. The index case and its threat to Nigeria have been eliminated.

Those isolated in Ogun State have been discharged, in Lagos, we will not follow up with the contacts again because none of them has developed symptoms. We are discharging all,” he said.

Nigeria confirmed its first case of the coronavirus on the 28th of February 2020 in Lagos State. Now, it seems the country is free of the infection for now.
