A highlighter is one makeup product that can take your makeup game to a full 10/10 and make you stand out when applied right. However, it is easy to go overboard and slight mistakes can mess up your look. You could also be using it all wrong without even realising.

Below are four of such highlighting mistakes you could be making without even knowing it.

1. Not knowing what works for your face shape

Highlight what works for you. People with oblong face shapes shouldn’t apply highlighter on their forehead and chin as you don’t want to highlight the length of your face. Similarly, diamond and triangular face shapes should focus on highlighting their cheekbones and cupid’s bow to make their best features catch all the light.

2. Using too much

The last thing you want to do is to look like a lighthouse with too much highlighter on. The idea here is to look dazzling not oily or shiny. You can mix it with your foundation for naturally glowing skin but always remember the golden rule which says “less is more”. Also, in case you overdose on highlighter, press some tissue over it to take the excess off, and brush some loose powder over it.

3. Using the wrong formula

Not many people know this, but the highlighter isn’t “one size fits all’. Using liquid highlighter with a powder foundation could make you look patchy and you don’t want that. Instead, use the same formula as your foundation to get the best results.

4. Using the wrong shade

Ever applied highlighter only to find it was looking off and far from what you thought it would turn out to be? If your highlighter is making you look like a shiny ghost rather than a glowing goddess, it is probably because you are using the wrong shade. Light skin tones should go for pink and peachy highlighters while warmer skin tones should opt for bronzy highlighters.
