Comcast is shutting down its gaming channel G4

Since this is the second time that Comcast is announcing shutting down G4, the headline sort of gives you Deja vu. Back in 2012, Comcast had been shut down after sticking around for about a decade.

Then, in November 2021, the gaming channel got another chance at life with a relaunch. It had been confirmed to appear on Comcast/Xfinity, Verizon Fios, Cox, and Philo. Additionally, the channel planned multi-year promotional and commercial partnerships.

It appears that despite its efforts, things did not just go as planned. In a memo, Dave Scott, the CEO of Comcast’s Spectacor division, blamed G4’s demise on low viewership and poor financial results.

“We invested to create the new G4 as an online and TV destination for fans to be entertained, be inspired, and connect with gaming content. Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4,” he wrote.

The Verge reported that the shutdown came as a surprise to many who worked for the channel and they had to find out via reports and tweets before Scott’s message reached them directly.

In the memo, he had said that the company’s HR team would support and discuss other opportunities with employees who will lose their jobs due to the shutdown. It is not clear how exactly it plans to help them. However, G4’s parent company, Comcast, owns several businesses like Xfinity, NBCUniversal, and Sky Group.
