In an interview with CNBC talking about the surge in video conferencing numbers, Cisco’s CEO, Chuck Robbins said its Webex service has seen a record of 5.5 billion minutes spent on meetings in just 11 days.

Although coronavirus has grounded most businesses to a halt, video conferencing services are recording a lot of activity. This is because as most organisations practice social distancing, video conferencing has become the most reliable way to meet with employees.

The 5.5 billion minutes Webex had recorded, Robbins told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street”, does not even take one on one meetings into account.

“In the last 11 days, our volumes have literally doubled. Since the outbreak in China, we saw 22 times the traffic coming out of China, and we’ve seen four times the traffic in Korea, Japan, and other areas, and we were already the biggest platform in the world,” Robbins said.

He added, “In the first 11 business days of March, we’ve had 5.5 billion meeting minutes. Yesterday we held 3.2 million meetings globally on Webex, and that doesn’t include one on ones. Those are multi-individual meetings.”

Sri Srinivasan, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s collaboration group, also told CNBC over a Webex call that their “MAU, WAU, DAU” were all at all-time highs. Srinivasan was referring to Webex’s Monthly, weekly and daily active users.

Earlier this month, Webex increased its free offer in all the countries it is available in. The offer includes no time restrictions and support for up to 100 participants. Cisco is also giving 90-days licenses to businesses that previously do not use its services.

If things continue as they are, Webex might actually surpass the 5.5 billion minutes within the same number of days.
