Singer Chike has apologised after he came under fire for saying Igbo people are “primitive” for travelling to their villages every festive season.
The singer on January 4th took to Twitter to share a tweet that was offensive to people of Igbo descent. In it, he called out Igbos for hurrying home every yuletide season and clogging up the roads, making it dangerous for all travellers.
“Stop travelling to the damn east just coz it Christmas! Is it worth your life??? Stop that primitive behaviour. The roads are busy. Pick another damn time! Plan! Learn! Learn! Fucking learn,” he wrote.
The tweet received severe backlash as many described it as insulting to all Igbos. Chike came under heavy fire with Igbos threatening to disown and cancel him.
Chike a few hours later came on the micro-blogging app to apologise for his offensive tweet. According to “Nakupenda” singer, he lost two friends in accidents on the eastern road during the festivities hence his emotional outburst.
“I believe my now-deleted tweet was misunderstood as it was an emotional one. This morning, 2 friends died on their road trip back from the village. I think the roads are too risky for everyone to be headed home & back. If you have been hurt, I sincerely apologize,”

The apology so far has been recieved with diverse reactions.
Chike insulted me and my family.
Just make you know say that tweet will not be forgotten.
Forgiven? Maybe.

Chike is even trending now more than he was when he released his songs.
Like they say, bad publicity can turn out to be a good one.
Maybe Chike shld continue to create controversies to keep trending.
Continue being angry while he keeps trending.

Dear Chike your tweet was from a poor state…
You speak so lowly of your people in Nigeria and expect others to take you seriously. If you can refer to your people as “Primitive” God knows what you said behind the scene.

LMAO…Some set of people are canceling Chiké because of his tweet in which I strongly believe that it was as a result of pain after losing two of his friends.
The good news is; You can’t cancel him, you would rather love him more. After today, you will all shake body to Roju.

Twitter Ng cancelled Eazi that year and mans blew on another level, Chike will be alright.

One big problem on TwitterNG is an inability to hold 2-3 independent truths simultaneously.
Did Chike goof? Yes he did.
Is canceling him & his music uncalled for, since he has explained what triggered it, deleted & apologized? Yes it is.Both aren’t mutually exclusive.

After all has been said, when Chike releases a new album, I’ll be here to promote the s**t out of it.
Was his tweet wrong? Did it get to me? Yea.
Still not enough to go overboard. I still belive in forgiveness and understanding. I hope we all do too
It’s 2021, let love lead.❤️
