ChatGPT Can Now Access The Internet For Answers

Summary:

  • OpenAI has updated ChatGPT to allow the chatbot to access external knowledge sources and databases, like the internet, through plugins.
  • The plugins will be available to premium users and developers, with plans to eventually roll them out more widely.
  • There are concerns about the dangers of plugging a language model to the web, including biased results and access to potentially incorrect information, but OpenAI says it put safeguards in place to mitigate these risks.

The makers of ChatGPT are removing one main hurdle in its usefulness, the ability to access the internet for real-time answers. In a recent update, OpenAI released plugins that lets the chatbot gather information from the web and other hird-party knowledge sources and databases.

ChatGPT is a generative language model trained on sets of data to recognise input and provide output. Unlike humans, the software cannot ‘think’, which is why it tends to ‘hallucinate’ results and be completely wrong sometimes without knowing it.

The new update is available to some premium users and developers on the company’s waitlist, the plan is to roll out the feature eventually on a larger scale, including releasing API access.

One plugin will let the chatbot use Bing search API to answer some questions, revealing the websites it visited in the reply. This will make it easier for users to cite sources when lifting answers for a material they are working on.

The danger with plugging a language model to the web is that it allows the AI access to variety of data, some of which may be wrong. Also, even in cases where the answer is not completely wrong, the results could be biased in favour of sources that the search engine deem more reputable. Thus, other sources may be unable to provide inputs.

OpenAI admits that it is aware of the several dangers and confesses that while it put safeguards in place, they may not be 100% able to prevent problems.

ChatGPT is also getting a Python code interpreter that allows the chatbot to solve mathematical and analytical problems as well as visualisation and converting files between formats. Additionally, there are several other plugins created by partnering companies that allow the AI’s users easily access their data and resources from the chatbox.
