Bosch unveiled a virtual visor inspired by LCD televisions at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to block the glare of the sun from entering a driver’s eyes. This is a major cause of road accidents.

The Bosch Virtual Visor uses algorithms and a camera to analyze what the driver is seeing through its display. Then it darkens the section through which the sunlight is glaring their eyes. The rest of the display remains transparent, blocking the sun without hindering the driver’s field of vision.

“You could be driving right toward the sun and you would still be able to see adequately,” said Jason Zink, an engineer on the project, as the company unveiled the product at the CES.

The CES show hosts around 4,500 exhibitors pitching designs and about 175,000 attendees searching for innovations of the future.

Bosch says studies from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that sun glare is responsible for thousands of accidents each year.

Another study also indicates the risk of a car crash is 16 percent higher anytime the sun is shining very brightly.

Bosch posits that traditional sun visors were inadequate because they blocked a large area from the field of vision to remove glare.

“We discovered early in the development that users adjust their traditional sun visors to always cast a shadow on their own eyes,” said Zink. Thus, they designed something more convenient.

A Bosch spokesperson also told Autocar:

“We are engaging in conversations now with OEMs (passenger car and commercial) and the goal is to bring it to the market”.

There’s no indication yet on when it will be on sale.

Ryan Todd, another Bosch engineer, said he thought of the idea “while driving east to work one morning”. He was thinking about television sets that control the brightness of LCD technology.

It was awarded Best of Innovation in CES 2020’s Innovation Awards. The Virtual Visor is also about the same shape and size as a standard sun visor.
