German automaker BMW and technology company IBM will not be attending the in-person CES 2022 event. Both companies will be joining the growing list of absteenses such as Mercedes, Panasonic, MSI, and others.
In a statement BMW says “Out of an abundance of caution, BMW will move all planned media activities at CES to a fully online program from Germany on January 5.”
While an IBM spokesperson said “Due to the evolving COVID conditions – and out of an abundance of caution – IBM has recently decided not to participate on-site in Las Vegas this year. We do still look forward to participating virtually.”
While these companies will not be attending the physical event, they will be looking to make a virtual presence. CTA organisers of the event in a statement said “For those attendees who are unable to join us in Las Vegas, they can participate digitally. Important details on updated health protocols and show entry process can be found at CES.tech.”
Microsoft is also joining the host of other tech companies to withdraw from the CES 2022 in-person event. The Redmond-based company will not be attending the largest tech show. Although, it will be having a digital presence for its Partner Innovation Experience and Automotive Press Kit.
An unnamed company spokesperson in an email statement broke the news about Microsoft’s withdrawal. “After reviewing the latest data on the rapidly evolving COVID environment, Microsoft has decided not to participate in-person at CES 2022,” He/she said.

CTA Consumer Technology Association organisers of CES insists the 2022 in-person event will go on despite numerous exhibitors withdrawal. Exhibitors including tech companies, startups and media houses have been withdrawing from the event.
CTA through the CES twitter official page sent out updates about the event on December 24 2022. While there are withdrawals, the organisers are very keen on the digital coverage of the event. “Our focus remains on convening the tech industry and giving those who cannot attend in person the ability to experience the magic of CES digitally” they said.
Reassuring the public, they sent out an official statement saying “…we are confident that attendees and exhibitors can have a socially distanced but worthwhile and productive event in Las Vegas, or while experiencing it online.”
CTA insists there will be a requirement for proof of vaccination, social distancing, masks and free rapid tests. Prominent companies still attending the event are LG, Samsung and Sony. Google, Intel and Waymo are also among the techonology companies to make a withdrawal.
