BMW is working on a custom voice assistant software for its cars based on Alexa technology. The car company has been using the Amazon-powered voice assistant since 2018 and its upcoming custom-made version will be using the same foundations.
In 2021, Amazon had launched an Alexa Custom Assistant service for other companies to customise their own voice assistant without going through the backbreaking process of building from scratch. Of course, clients would pay licensing fees for using the tech, but, it appears to be a better option.
BMW plans to create a voice assistant that is tailor-made for its cars and have its own set of action words as well as voices. The company said that it plans to complete the build in the next two years and start rolling it out for customers.

“[It will] provide customers the benefits of an intelligent assistant that is a vehicle and services expert, while Alexa will provide the familiar experience many customers already know and love,” the automaker said in a statement.
BMW is not the only car company that is taking advantage of the Alexa Custom Assistant service. The Verge mentioned in a report that the company has deals with Lamborghini and Rivian as well.
The tech faces stiff competition from Apple and Google, who also have their own operating systems that allow for plug-in. Meanwhile, Amazon software users are left with using the Echo Auto. No doubt, the custom service would improve on the limitations that Echo Auto has.
