World-leading companies like Facebook and Google will now need to reveal how they match adverts to users. A new branch of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will carry out these investigations.

This is following a recent announcement by US authorities to investigate these tech companies. Australian treasurer, Josh Frydenberg says, “These companies are among the most powerful and valuable in the world. They need to be held to account and their activities need to be more transparent.”

Frydenberg says that it was time for people to have a more vivid picture of how the algorithm used by tech companies work. However, a lot of these algorithms are very intimate commercial secrets. Computers use algorithms to make intelligent decisions.

However, there have been allegations that a company like Google will purposely prioritize its own adverts in its search results. The ACCC advocates making more solid privacy laws and establish a law that will restrict how tech firms benefit from user content.

Meanwhile, the government of Australia will now start acting on the law on Tech companies after a 12-week consultation process. The ACCC also admits that they are currently running five separate investigations into Google and Facebook.

They want these companies to be more transparent. The idea of breaking them up is also one that is still on the table.
