Avengers: Endgame officially surpassed 2009’s Avatar as the highest-grossing film worldwide of all time. About a month ago, Marvel fans conceded that Avatar would remain the highest-grossing film of all time. But that changed last night as Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, announced that Avengers: Endgame had surpassed Avatar.

Fiege announced at San Diego Comic-Con, that Endgame will officially surpass Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time either today or tomorrow. The film has earned over $2.79 billion in global returns. There is an approximate $500,000 difference between Endgame and Avatar, which analysts predict will close within a day.
Avengers: Endgame is the last instalment and culmination of the Marvel superhero franchise that started with Iron Man in 2008.
Disney and Marvel Studios had made a lot of effort to push Endgame to the number one spot at the box office. They had released a version of the film, which featured a tribute to Stan Lee and some post-credit scenes. Their efforts have undoubtedly paid off because Endgame has officially made history for Disney.
Endgame’s accomplishments are not so straightforward, however.
On the one hand, Avatar’s previous record included a series of theatrical re-releases in 2010 with additional footage. When looking only at the grosses from the initial theatre release, Avengers: Endgame actually surpassed Avatar weeks ago. This was, of course, aided by a theatrical expansion at the end of June made to promote the next Marvel Studios release, Spider-Man: Far From Home.
On the other hand, considering ticket price inflation, Avengers: Endgame still ranks behind Avatar’s domestic grosses by a bit more than $100 million. But it’s clear that based on raw ticket sales, Avatar still outpaces Endgame by a considerable amount.
