It is no secret that electric vehicle maker Tesla is ahead of all its rivals, so much that the company has had to sue some of them for poaching trade secrets along with employees. One person that admits this is Audi CEO, Markus Duesmann.

Speaking to a German publication, Handelsblatt, Duesmann concedes that in the electric vehicle sector, Tesla is at least two years ahead of Audi. He also concedes Tesla’s technological dominance as regards software, architecture, and autonomous driving as well.

“Currently, Tesla has larger batteries because their cars are built around the batteries. Tesla is two years ahead in terms of computing and software architecture, and in autonomous driving as well,” he said.

Duesmann also hopes that the car market will pick up especially after the coronavirus hurt its production and sales. The Audi CEO also expects car sales to reach pre-COVID-19 levels but only by 2022 or 2023.

We certainly expect the coronavirus crisis to have longer-term effects,” He said.

The CEO adds that although things are looking better as governments are beginning to lift the shelter-in-place restrictions. He says that the improvements are not as he would have preferred. “We have had a very difficult second quarter. Things are slowly picking up, but not as a ‘sharp V’ as one would wish for,” Duesmann said.

Audi is hoping to sell about 40,000 e-Tron models in 2020, despite selling just 17,000 in the first six months according to Duesmann.

As for comparisons with Tesla, It is expected that the Audi is behind because it just became really serious in its electric vehicle pursuit in the last five years thereabouts.
