Latest reports reveal that Google Photos has now reached one billion users. The photo editing and organising service was the ninth product by Google to hit the mark. Before now, Gmail, Android, Google search, Google Maps and YouTube all have over one billion users.

The best part is that Google Photos made this mark in a really short time. The app, which Google announced at its 2015 I/O conference, had over 100 million monthly users within its first five months. In two years, the app was able to amass 500 million users.

The app, which is a stock app on every Android device, was originally a spinoff from Google+. Google discontinued the Google+ app earlier this year from lack of use. Google Photos has, on its own, been able to make use of the best parts of Google+ technology. It was able to shed the dead weight of the less popular features that made Google+ unpopular.

Google has also now launched a Gallery Go app as an alternative to the main Google Photos app. This is in a bid to hit the 2 billion user mark. Google VP, Anil Sabharwal confirmed this by saying, “We’ve crossed this really critical milestone of a billion monthly users, and Gallery Go is how we think about the next billion.”
