Apple is introducing a new feature in its iOS 13.5 developer beta 3 update that allows iPhone users to unlock their devices with Face ID.
This new feature is faster and works even while a user is wearing a medical mask or facial covering. Because the medical gears are essential to curb the spread of COVID-19, this is a welcome innovation. The beta update is available to developers for testing before a general release.
Currently, if you’re wearing a mask or covering a part of your face, you’d need to lift your mask to unlock your iPhone with Face ID.
Twitter user Robert Petersen shared a video demonstrating the feature after another user had shared a screenshot of the update.
As pointed out by @Sonikku_a2, if you’re wearing a mask, iOS 13.5 goes straight to the passcode screen if you try to unlock with Face ID (keypad not shown because iOS hides it in screen recordings) pic.twitter.com/bQCzu5u20p

By the point when you realise that you need to take off your mask, there’d already been a small and slightly annoying delay. This is when your phone suggests that you use the passcode option as it can’t scan your face.
You could also choose to turn off Face ID, however, that goes with the convenience of the feature when you’re using your iPhone at home without a mask.
The update will not only work for unlocking the iPhone but will also help in authenticating purchases. This includes App Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iTunes, and other apps that need Face ID authentication.
The new beta version also comes with Apple and Google’s new coronavirus tracking software. This software will make it easier to build apps that notify people if they’ve been around a person that has Covid-19.
The iOS 13.5 update should be released to everyone in the coming weeks.
