Apple is making suppliers support its push for renewable energy

Apple says that its suppliers’ more than doubled’ their clean energy use between 2021 and 2022, as part of the company’s bid to promote renewable power.

Unlike many other tech companies with clean energy vows, Apple takes its own one step further by helping its suppliers do the same. In an announcement on Thursday, 14 April 2022, the Silicon Valley company said that its partners were able to avoid 13.9 million metric tons of carbon emissions in 2021 alone.

“As of today, 213 of the company’s major manufacturing partners have pledged to power all Apple production with renewable electricity across 25 countries. The dozens of new commitments announced today will accelerate progress toward Apple’s 2030 goal to become carbon neutral across its entire supply chain,” the blog post read.

On its own, Apple has been carbon neutral since 2020, and it has been sharing what it learned during its transition process with others by publishing data and offering training materials.

The iPhone makers are also making direct investments in renewable energy projects worldwide. For example, it is responsible for ‘nearly’ 500 megawatts of clean power projects in China and Japan.

Infineon (which makes semiconductors and system solutions), Viscom AG (a manufacturer of inspection technologies), and Lumileds (provider of led lighting and other lighting solutions) are some of the European suppliers that joined Apple’s supplier commitment over the past year.

There are DuPont and Micron Technology in the US, while Chinese-based Ruicycle and Japanese headquartered Kioxia Corporation and Sharp Corporation are also onboard.

As Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said: “Clean energy is good for business and good for the planet.”
