Apple Says WordPress No longer Has To Offer In-App Purchases

Apple has announced that WordPress no longer has to offer in-app purchases. The company was initially going to cut off updates to WordPress’ iOS app unless it supported in-app purchases.

“We believe the issue with the WordPress app has been resolved. Since the developer removed the display of their service payment options from the app, it is now a free stand-alone app and does not have to offer in-app purchases. We have informed the developer and apologize for any confusion that we have caused,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple said the WordPress app initially featured a payment-plan section but didn’t offer in-app payments. The company said the move violates its App Store rules that all developers must follow. Apple must get a 30% commission on all in-app payments.

WordPress founding developer, Matt Mullenweg, had tweeted that Apple was going to cut off updates and bug fixes to its iOS app unless it committed to supporting in-app purchases for WordPress’ payment plans.

Heads up on why @WordPressiOS updates have been absent… we were locked by App Store. To be able to ship updates and bug fixes again we had to commit to supporting in-app purchases for .com plans. I know why this is problematic, open to suggestions. Allow others IAP? New name?

Mullenweg says the open-source website builder used by around 38% of the internet and with the resolution with Apple’s app store and its removal of payment options from the app, its iOS users can now update their WordPress app again.
