Reports suggest that Apple is quietly rolling out a power-saving feature in its iOS 13 iPhone operating system. The next software update will prevent the iPhone’s battery life from getting shorter over time.

The feature, which is called Optimised Battery Charging, will prevent the iPhone’s battery from staying at a 100% charge for too long.

Batteries generally age faster when they are stressed. Therefore, having the battery at a 100% charge for a long time every day puts a strain on the batteries. The more the battery ages, it retains less and less energy. This results in shorter battery life as the phone ages.

It is worthy to note that the iOS 13 is in fact only coming to the newer line of iPhones. This is from the iPhone 6S to date. It also includes the iPhone SE which was released in 2016.

How the power-saving feature works on Apple iPhones

The new technology means that when you charge your iPhone, it will only go up to 80%. If the phone is plugged in for a long period, there will be a 20% charge left.

Apple says that the iPhone will have smart technology that will learn from the user’s daily charging routine. It will use this to know when to top off the remaining 20% battery charge.

For most people who leave their phones to charge overnight, the iPhone will eventually learn their routine and charge accordingly.

However, if you don’t have a routine, your iPhone might have a hard time knowing your charging habit. It may then only charge your phone to 80% at every plug-in.

Meanwhile, you can disable the feature in the iOS13 settings if you would rather your phone charge normally.

This new feature means that you can now control how fast and iPhone battery ages. However, the feature will not work on phones that already have old, stressed batteries.

If your battery already doesn’t go a full day on a full charge, this new feature will most likely not work. It will apparently work best on new phones that have fresh batteries.

If your battery is already old though and you want to take advantage of this feature, Apple is replacing batteries at the Apple Store for a fee. It is $80 in the US.
