Apple Responds To Facebook, Says It Is “Standing Up For Our Users”

Apple has responded to Facebook’s newspaper ads criticising its upcoming privacy changes. The tech giant says that it is “standing up for our users”. Facebook took out the ads criticising Apple over a future iOS update that will require users to give their permission for apps to collect their data.

The social media company is claiming that the changes will “limit businesses’ ability to run personalised ads and reach their customers effectively”.

The company posted the ads in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. “We’re standing up to Apple for small businesses everywhere,” the headline on the ad read.

“We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users. Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not. App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 does not require Facebook to change its approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising, it simply requires they give users a choice,” Apple said.

Meanwhile, Facebook reportedly plans to run another anti-Apple ad on Thursday, 17th December 2020. BuzzFeed News editor John Paczkowski posted a photo of the proposed ad on his Twitter page.

This new ad will reportedly claim that Apple’s software update will “change the internet as we know it for the worse”. Facebook says this is because sites like sports blogs and cooking sites will have to charge for subscriptions or in-app purchases instead of running personalised ads that would help them generate revenue and offer content for free.
