Apple is cutting down on its iPhone 12 mini production in the first half of 2021. Planned production of the smallest iPhone 12 model has reportedly been reduced by 70 percent or more in the first half of the year according to Nikkei Asia.

The cut represents the majority of a 20 percent cut in total iPhone 12 production. It has already asked some suppliers to temporarily stop producing iPhone 12 mini-specific components. Other parts are also reportedly being reallocated to the Pro and Pro Max, according to Nikkei.

Nikkei also reports that Apple has pushed back its production of two new Apple Silicon MacBooks. The PCs were originally due to begin mass production in May or June 2021. Now, the company will now manufacture them in the second half of the year instead.

Apple expects the iPhone’s overall production to rise in comparison to 2020. Apply is reportedly planning to produce 75 million handsets in the first half of 2021, and 230 million phones during the year. It seems that Apple’s approach in booking up production capacity in the first place in the face of the global chip shortage is causing it problems. The iPhone maker is not alone, as the chip shortage is affecting companies within and outside the tech industry.

However, the iPhone 12 mini simply hasn’t lived up to expectations. In a February 2021 report, Reuters reported analyst data that claimed sales of the 12 mini had made up just five percent of Apple’s smartphone sales in the first half of January 2021.

The iPhone 12 mini also made up just 10 to 15 percent of Apple’s iPhone 12 series orders as of the end of 2021 according to Nikkei.
