Apple has announced that it is joining the Data Sharing Project. This is so it can develop interoperable systems that will bring data in and out of its iCloud. This is coming a year after the project’s official launch.

It will be joining Google, Facebook, and Twitter on the project.

The Data Transfer Project is an open-source project aimed at making it easier to transfer data from one service to another. It consists mostly of back-end coding that will make export tools from different companies like Google and Facebook compatible with each other.

Presently, these tools let you download data directly to your hard drive. However, the plan in the near future is for the project’s code to allow the data to be transferred directly to another company’s service.

This means that users will be able to transfer files directly from Facebook onto their Google accounts. No other clients will be required to make this exchange thereby reducing the risks of data leakage.

Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter agrees to the project back in 2018. However, it seems to still be a work in progress as the official site says. “We are continually making improvements that might cause things to break occasionally. So as you are trying things please use it with caution and expect some hiccups,” it explained.

On its part, Google has confirmed that new user-facing projects will be introduced in a few months. This is because most of the underground work is being done on the backend. They say, “We’re really encouraged by the progress the Data Transfer Project has made since we announced it last year, and look forward to rolling out our first user-facing features in the coming months.”
