Apple, Google, and Mozilla are working together on the next big thing in the browsing world, which will be known as Speedometer 3.
In case you didn’t know, these three are behind the browsers Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. These companies will build a benchmark that tests how their apps perform with websites. In turn, the tool will help the browser makers improve their app’s performance for users.
“Historically benchmarks haven’t done a great job at this and have actively competed for attention with the needs of real sites,” Mozilla said. “Unlike some past benchmarks, Speedometer 3 is being started as a cross-industry collaborative effort. Building this will be hard work, and working together gives us a chance to build the best version to help make the Web faster for years to come.”

Apple’s WebKit voiced the same opinion about what the benchmark will help the companies achieve.
We’re excited to work with @googlechrome and @firefox on the next Speedometer benchmark, which measures real-world browser performance on the Web. Working together will help us further improve the benchmark and improve browser performance for our users.https://t.co/8NoPzoh9mF pic.twitter.com/21EjlN1u3z

However, Google further assured the public that they were not going to tamper with the benchmark’s results to favour their browsers. Instead, significant changes would require approval from another participating browser.
For now, the Speedometer 3 is still in its early stages of development and there is not much information on what progress have been made and when it would be available. You can read more about the project on its GitHub page.
