Brazil fines Apple $19 million for selling iPhones without chargers

Brazil has fined Apple $19 million in what it calls social damages, for not selling iPhones with chargers. A Sao Paulo state court passed the judgement on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

The fine comes after the company ignored a September ruling instructing it to begin including chargers in its phone box, something it stopped doing in 2020, with the launch of iPhone 12. In its argument, the iPhone maker said that it stopped selling chargers in order to reduce carbon emissions.

The company’s reason seems to make sense as many iPhone users already have chargers and producing chargers with each new lineup, which comes out annually, will be causing more emission, which is unnecessary. Although, it still makes chargers, which it sells on a standalone basis as well as its MagSafe Battery Pack (power bank).

So, while Apple is parading itself as being environmentally friendly, it still tries to sell phone accessories that are missing from the box.

“It is evident that, under the justification of a ‘green initiative,’ the defendant imposes on the consumer a required purchase of charger adapters that were previously supplied along with the product,” the judge said during the ruling.

The fine is just part of the judgement as Apple is expected to begin shipping their phones with chargers now, if they hope to sell it in Brazil. In addition, the authorities want the company to provide chargers for Brazilians who purchased Apple products since 2020.
