They will both no longer work for HBO as writers. However, they will still have to fulfill the expectations of their on-going deal with Disney. They have a multi-film deal for the Star Wars franchise with the animation company. In fact, the first of the new Star Wars trilogy films will be hitting the cinemas in 2022.

Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos said: “We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

Also, the pair went on to thank HBO for the time they spent there. They said, “We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months, we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber.”

“We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them,” Benioff and Weiss added.

Although, as regards the Game of Thrones upcoming spinoff series, the two producers will still get credit as executive producers of the show. However, they will not be involved in the day-to-day production of the show.

Reports suggest that the deal with the two producers was very competitive. Netflix won the bid against Amazon and Disney. Apparently, Netflix beat the other two to it by presenting a deal that was good enough for the duo in July 2019.

Netflix has also recently signed multimillion-dollar deals with Scandal creator, Shonda Rhimes, and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy. Meanwhile, in all of these, Netflix is faced with slow growth due to an increase in its subscription plans and poor shows performance.
