Andela Turns All Full-Time Developers To Gig Workers, Shelves Salary Model

Andela is reportedly making one of the biggest changes in its existence by turning all full-time developers into gig workers and abandoning paying salaries.

According to WeeTracker that broke the news, Andela has been undergoing serious changes since the start of the pandemic. One of its most obvious ones was going remote completely, then bringing professionals on board as contractors.

Now, sources say that the company is now fully using a gig-model where contractors only get paid for work that they do. In a statement, Andela said, “As we started allowing engineers to apply to join the Andela network as contractors, one of the most common questions was whether existing engineers would be allowed to convert if they wanted to.

“We announced last week that we would be allowing engineers to choose whether they wanted to continue as full-time employees or convert to contractors. We will no longer be supporting a paid bench though, which means engineers will be paid when they are working, but not when they aren’t.”

This is a total change in policy for the popular computer coding and programming company. When Andela made headway in Nigeria and other African countries, it sought to employ the best talents in the computing world.

While the company still largely outsourced its talent to bigger tech companies that required their services; the difference was that they received salaries then. But, shelving the salary model, Andela would now only pay computer engineers that get work done.

However, it added that it would offer a long-term contractor option to new recruits. It had first offered this option to its employed engineers.

Transitioning into a gig platform is a two-sided thing for engineers working with Andela. For one, they get to choose when to work and also have more control over their time. On the other hand, they would lose employment benefits like paid leave and likely, a host of other employment-related stipends.

The changes had been coming to Andela gradually. It had stopped its junior developer program late in 2019, laying off 400 developers. This was not long after it started hiring people who were already professionals in the field. In May 2020, the company also sacked 135 developers as well.

Now, as a complete gig company, Andela would be able to cut costs and pay only those bringing in money.
