Amazon is warning sellers on its online store against over-inflating the price for surgical masks. Surgical masks now have a huge demand due to the outbreak of coronavirus worldwide.

Wired reports that the e-commerce giants have been alerting sellers who don’t comply with its pricing policies, citing an email. The pricing policies have been in place since before the outbreak of the coronavirus. Some overpriced face masks have since been deleted from the site.

“Sellers set their own product prices in our store and we have policies to help ensure sellers are pricing products competitively. We actively monitor our store and remove offers that violate our policies,” an Amazon spokesman said in a statement.

Amazon requires sellers to abide by its Fair Pricing Policy. The pricing policy prohibits listing items for significantly more than “recent prices offered on or off Amazon.”

Amazon told several mask sellers earlier in February that they had violated the rule according to Ed Rosenberg, a consultant who also runs a support group for Amazon sellers.

“If you price gouge—charge too much for these masks, they sometimes take you down,” he said.

According to James Thomson, a former Amazon employee, the company often enforces its Fair Pricing Policy during the holiday season, especially with sellers offering popular toys.

“If sellers change their prices too much, or worse yet, change the list price on their items so that they can move up their selling price, Amazon notices and may intervene,” he said.
