Chadwick Boseman’s death came as a rude shock to many. Largely because he played the iconic role of Black Panther, a marvel superhero that made both character and actor seem larger than life itself. Even when recent photos before his passing pointed towards the illness that ravaged his body, many chucked it down to his preparing for a new role which demanded he lose weight.
More amazing and inspiring is the knowledge that the 43-year-old battled colon cancer, which he was diagnosed for in 2016 while giving us films that we’ve come to enjoy and love.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all. And brought you so many of the films you have come to love so much,” the statement posted on his Instagram said. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more. All were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”
His role as T’challa in Black Panther, the hallmark of his career inspired many who’d never before seen a black superhero with such strength, grace, and class.
Chadwick Boseman was not only a revolutionary actor, he shared himself in other ways, spreading joy and courage with his words even while he fought to live.

“We know what it’s like to be young, gifted, and Black.” Chadwick Boseman said in his acceptance speech answering questions on if “Black Panther” had changed the film industry. “We all know what it’s like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured. Yet you are young, gifted, and Black. We know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen for you to be featured on. A stage for you to be featured on. What it’s like to be the tail and not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath and not above.”
