Airbnb launches anti-party tech to spot potential rule breakers

Airbnb is rolling out an anti-party tech that can spot potential rule breaker and make it easier to stop them at the point of booking.

The home-rental platform has made the no-party rule it began during the pandemic a part of its policy. It explains that the tech will prevent users from taking advantage of its service to host unauthorised parties by using a series of checks.

Some of these includes looking at their history of positive or negative reviews as well as how long the user has been using the platform. Also, the length of trip, distance to the listing, and even if the time they are booking falls on a weekend or weekday will inform the tech’s decision to flag the user or not.

If flagged, it does not mean the user would not be able to book. Instead, they will be restricted to spaces where the Host is present, to monitor the situation, or a hotel room.

“Today, we’re announcing the introduction of new anti-party tools in the US and Canada to help identify potentially high-risk reservations and prevent those users from taking advantage of our platform,” Airbnb said in a statement. “This anti-party technology is designed to prevent a reservation attempt from going through. Guests who are unable to make entire home bookings due to this system will still be able to book a private room (where the Host is more likely to be physically on site) or a hotel room through Airbnb.”

In addition, the company revealed that the new tech is working on its existing under-25 tool, which monitors potential guests under the age of 25 without a previous positive review.
