Accelerate Estonia: How Estonia is Using Tech To Combat COVID-19

When COVID-19 hit Estonia, the citizenry did better than most countries; they acted decisively. Accelerate Estonia put together an online hackathon to tackle the pandemic and its aftermath.

 

As per Garage48, in just six hours, they were able to come up with ideas and execute them. 96 ideas and 830+ people later, Accelerate Estonia also had 27 teams working and here are some of the ideas they came up with;

 

SafeHouse – It will create an app that helps people to regain control over their lives when everyone feels completely helpless.

 

Tutor.id – This is a tutoring service for school kids who are in quarantine. Here they can learn, and study for their exams. This idea will also help teachers who are out of their paid leave to earn extra income.

 

CureAssist – CureAssist makes healthcare as smart as possible. The idea also employs the best tools of AI and machine learning to achieve its goal.

Corona-tracker by Velmio – Using SPO2 (oxygen saturation) & HR (Heart Rate) sensors in modern smartwatches to monitor the progression of Coronavirus & recovery.

 

Eˉlektron – An online “collective group” entertainment experience.

 

Share Force One – Workforce sharing platform that connects B2B sides for temporary workforce exchange.

Self-assessment app – Online questionnaire for residents detailing their current health status along with the current location, resulting in visualized and location data.

 

The app also gives health care providers access to the infected person’s travel history, contact them, and do a follow-up on their current health status.

 

Koroonakaart.ee – A digital Dashboard for Estonian Coronavirus stats and spread.

 

AgileEmployment – Helping to decide when employees’ work is most efficient and how to arrange their responsibilities between home and work as they work remotely.

 

Remote work transition for corporates – Well, self-explanatory? Helping organisations transition to a new way of working.

 

Forecast-20 – Helping researchers understand how seasonality impacts the spread of the virus spreading and if they should also take weather/climate into consideration when preparing to deal with the numbers.

 

Coronabot – A quick channel for asking questions about the coronavirus and getting answers.

 

Statebot – An automated solution for basic and official information as most government offices are closed. The goal is to release resources at state information channels.

 

Database for medically trained volunteers – A database that helps to manage, find people with suitable competences and also call them to action.

 

NotAlone – Emotional and mental support platform for the infected and quarantined.

 

Ventit – This will help in building cheap and easy to set-up mechanical ventilators for the hospitals.

 

Remotely – Provide tools and best practices for teams forced to work remotely for the first time.

 

SME Survival Maker – Help small and medium-sized enterprises handle the crisis.

 

SmartID – Provide SmartID & authentication solutions for rapid development.

LearnPlaySafe – Will teach preschoolers Coronavirus safety through a board game.

 

Volunteer-tasking – A crowdsourcing app to get local community volunteers and assistance to people in need.

 

Viri – Helps in tracking local virus spread and self-reports infection status digitally through the application. This also will help to capture virus infections early.

 

E-supermarket – An online platform for supermarkets in town and their stocks will be displayed with the option of contactless delivery.

 

Kri-assist – An all in one crisis solution that helps people who are cut off from supplies to find various tailored services, track the situation of crises, and also find other people to share their experiences with.

 

Salty bunch – An ultra-cheap non-toxic, easily removable coating killing COVID-19.

 

Help community – To virtually connect those who need help in local communities with those who can help.

 

Kabe – An application with 2 user types – the infected and the non-infected. The app tracks the location of its users. The user can mark themself infected and the location data will be compared to non-infected users. Based on the proximity of the two users, non-infected users will also get a risk score.
