A Look At The Science Behind The Viral #LeftOrRightBrainTest

We take a look at the science behind the left and right hemispheres of the brain that a trending Twitter hashtag, #LeftOrRightBrainTest, has popularised.

The recent #LeftOrRightBrainTest that has gone viral was created by a website called, A Real Me. The website is dedicated to creating original, high quality, and fun quizzes that cover personality, knowledge, relationships, and more.

At the end of a series of questions, and depending on the answers one provides; the software determines if a person is more left brain inclined or right brain inclined.

There are some results that come out as Left-Right balanced. However, for many people, it is either they are Analytic (left brain inclined) or Instinctive (right brain inclined).

How does this work? Is there a science or research work that proves the above assertion of how a person reasons and with which part of their brain?

Lateralization of the brain is the general scientific term to describe the tendency for some neural functions to be focused on one part of the brain or another. It is truly a confirmed scientific phenomenon that some brain activities are done by one side of it.

The two sides are called cerebral hemispheres. While they are all part of a person’s brain; the different compositions of neuronal networks cause some parts to perform specific duties.

There is a general consensus that Language (grammar and vocabulary) are specialized functions of the left hemisphere, most of its applications are oversimplifications and they could be wrong.

For example, like the viral #LeftOrRightBrainTest; this is a case of presenting the functional differences between the brain’s hemisphere as being more finely differentiated than it truly is. This is the result of ‘pop psychology’ and nothing more.

Thus, in essence, while there may be some truth to some of the results, they are not absolutely infallible. The truth is that there is no specialised list of functions of the brain hemispheres.
